4.2.6. Support [x] (SuCri2AutoSelectMultipleSupport)

Overview

With the Support [x] function you place supports in AutoCAD Plant 3D for all pipes on one or more steel structures in a single pass. You select the structures (optionally also the pipes concerned); SuCri finds the pipes above or below the structure, asks for the support for the first pipe and places the same support for the other pipes.

Where can I find the function?

"SuCri" tab > "Module 2" panel > manufacturer button of your licensed catalog > Dashboard > Turbo Tools > Support [x].

Alternatively in the SuCri tool palette under Multiple Placement > Support. You open the palette in the dashboard via the pin icon in the title bar ("Pin to tool palette"). The command SuCri2AutoSelectMultipleSupport can also be entered directly in the command line.

How it works in detail

Step 1: Call the function

1. Open the DWG file that contains your piping and steel structures.
2. Start Support [x] via the dashboard, the tool palette or the command line.

Expected result: The command line prompts you: "Please select Structure to add support:". A selection made before starting is adopted directly.

Step 2: Select structures and optionally pipes

1. In one selection step, select one or more structures (by single selection or window/crossing). Plant 3D steel profiles, Advance Steel profiles, concrete parts and 3D solids as well as profile supports count as structures.
2. Optionally, also select pipes in the same selection. Then only these pipes are taken into account; without a pipe selection, SuCri searches for all pipes in the area of the structure.
3. Confirm the selection with the Enter key (Enter).

Step 3: Select the support for the first pipe

1. For the first pipe found (the highest one first), SuCri lists the matching supports in the command line ("Select available support:").
2. Accept the suggestion with Enter or select another option. Press Esc to cancel the entire process.

Expected result: SuCri places the selected support on the first pipe and the same support for the other pipes.

Step 4: Check the result

1. Check the automatically generated supports in model space. Pipes without a matching support are marked red if the setting Colour pipe red when no support is found is active.
2. If required, click individual components to adjust their properties in the AutoCAD properties window.

Behavior for further pipes

If the support selected for the first pipe does not fit on another pipe, the setting Multiple placement: same support decides. You can find it under "SuCri" tab > "Settings" panel > Settings (command SuCriSettings), "Module 2" area, "General" tab, "Turbo Tools" group (selection list, default value: Next available support/clamp):

• Next available support/clamp: SuCri places the first matching support.
• Only the selected support/clamp: SuCri does not place a support on this pipe.
• Similar type of the selected support/clamp: SuCri places a support of a similar type.

Further settings in the same group: Colour pipe red when no support is found (On/Off, default value: activated), Space above structure (default value: 500) and Space below structure (default value: 5000) for the search area of the pipes as well as Max. pipe slope (°) (default value: 3).

Application examples

Example 1: Supporting all pipes on a beam

You select a cross beam, confirm with Enter and accept the suggested support for the first pipe. SuCri places supports on all pipes above the beam.

Example 2: Supporting only selected pipes

You select the beam and also two pipes. Only these two pipes receive supports.

Tips and best practices

• Visibility: Objects must not be on locked or hidden layers.
• Performance: With a very large number of objects, the calculation can take a few seconds.
• Structures in xrefs: For structures in an attached xref, use Support Xref [x] (SuCri2SelectMultipleSupportFromRef), in the dashboard under Turbo Tools or in the tool palette under Multiple Placement > Support (Xref).
• With clamps: If clamps are to be placed at the same time, use Support+Clamp [x].

Troubleshooting

• Command not found: Check whether the plugin is loaded correctly and your license is active. Restart AutoCAD if necessary.
• Nothing happens after the selection: The selection does not contain a valid structure, or there are no pipes in the search area of the structure. Check the selection and the settings for the space above and below the structure.
• "Cannot find suitable support. Make sure the distance is valid.": No support matches the distance between pipe and structure for this pipe.
• "Pipe slope = … degree > max slope allowed (…)": The pipe is steeper than set in Max. pipe slope (°).
• Wrong components: Check the pipe class and the vendor data for the stored support types.
• System crash: Save your model before running complex automations and reduce the number of objects selected at the same time if necessary.
