Working with Unsupported Sections in SuCri

Learn how to handle connection challenges in Advance Steel when sections are not directly supported by SuCri. By using pseudo-sections, you enable effective modeling and automated placement of connections.

Prerequisites

Ensure that the desired special section or customer-specific section is already available in your Advance Steel environment, even if it is not initially recognized by SuCri.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Select Pseudo-Section: Choose a standard section that is supported by SuCri and is as close as possible in dimensions to the target section.
  2. Place Section: Model this pseudo-section at the desired location in the project.
  3. Create Connection: Open SuCri and place the desired Connection on this pseudo-section.

    Result: The connection is successfully created because SuCri recognizes the standard section.

  4. Adjust Properties: Select the pseudo-section and open the Advance Steel Properties. Deactivate the options for Numbering and Bill of Materials (BOM) so that the section does not appear in the documentation.
  5. Layer Assignment: Place the pseudo-section on a separate layer (e.g., Auxiliary_Construction_SuCri) and hide it to maintain clarity in the model.
  6. Place Original Section: Place the actual target section exactly at the same position as the pseudo-section.

Important Notes

  • Geometry: The chosen pseudo-section should be as close as possible to the original section in geometry and dimensions to avoid collisions.
  • Verification: Manually check all connection and drill points after placing the real section.
  • Design: The designer must ensure that the selected connection is structurally suitable and permissible for the actual section.

Troubleshooting

If SuCri does not suggest a suitable connection, it is usually because the section name or the standard does not match the stored data sets in the SuCri logic. The pseudo-section method described above bypasses this logic check at the time of placement.
