Profile positions offset after import into Advance Steel
In this article you will learn how to solve problems when exporting profiles from AutoCAD Plant 3D to Advance Steel. Correct placement of the profiles in the source software is crucial for a precise transfer of your design data.
Prerequisites
- You use AutoCAD Plant 3D for modeling the steelwork profiles.
- The profiles are to be exported to Advance Steel for further detailing.
Step-by-step guide

Open your model in Plant 3D and identify the affected profiles.

Make sure that profiles are always placed centered along the center of gravity line when inserted in Plant 3D. Avoid inserting via outer edges or user-defined reference lines.
Result: The geometry reference between Plant 3D and Advance Steel remains identical.

Carry out the export to Advance Steel again.

In the target model in Advance Steel, check whether the positions now match the axes exactly.
Important notes
- Background: During import, Advance Steel strictly orients itself to the center of gravity line (center axis) of a profile. If a different reference point was chosen in Plant 3D, Advance Steel interprets the position incorrectly during export, which leads to shifts or rotations.
- Best practice: Configure your profile libraries or content packs so that the standard insertion axis is fundamentally on the center of gravity line.
- Profiles should be exported without manual cuts or complex modifications if these could affect the axis position.
Troubleshooting
- Profile lies outside the axis: In Plant 3D, check the selected alignment point in the steelwork options menu. Correct the point to "Center" so that the profile lies symmetrically to the system line.
- Rotated profiles: Make sure that the rotation of the profile in Plant 3D is fixed to
0,90,180or270degrees to minimize differences in the coordinate system.
