7.3.2. Combination of Plant 3D and Advance Steel – handling changes in steelwork

In cooperative planning between Plant 3D and Advance Steel (ADVS), a native, intelligent connection for automatic updates is missing. Since no automatic change detection exists between the systems, a manual check and adjustment of the steel structures as well as the associated supports is mandatory.
Prerequisites
- The steelwork design including primary supports was created in Plant 3D.
- The export to Advance Steel for finalization was carried out.
- The finished steel structure is embedded as an XREF in Plant 3D.
Step-by-step guide
- Checking the steelwork changes: Regularly check the changes made to the steel structure in Advance Steel.
- Updating the XREF: Reload the XREF file in Plant 3D to make the current state of the structure visible.
Expected result: The visual representation of the steelwork in Plant 3D corresponds to the current planning state from Advance Steel. - Adjusting the supports: Use the Turbo tools to place the pipe supports directly on the updated ADVS steelwork anew or to adjust existing positions.
Important notes
- Separate data management: Note that the systems work technically separately. Advance Steel manages the steelwork details, while Plant 3D is responsible for pipe classes and support automation.
- Standard behavior: There is currently no automatic change tracking or notification. Responsibility for the check lies with the Plant 3D user.
- Project management: Define clear responsibilities within the team for who communicates changes to the steelwork.
- Efficiency: Use Turbo tools in a targeted manner to minimize the manual effort when rearranging supports after steelwork changes.
Troubleshooting
- Support hanging in the air: If steel profiles have moved, supports lose their reference. After every XREF update, check the contact points of the supports to the steelwork.
