    Joint connection

    In this article you will learn how to create a hinged connection using the SuCri plugin for AutoCAD Plant 3D or Advance Steel. Technically, a joint exists when one endpoint of a rail coincides exactly with one endpoint of a column.

    Prerequisites

    • Installed CAD program: AutoCAD Plant 3D or Advance Steel is present on your system.
    • SuCri plugin: The plugin is installed and activated within the CAD environment.
    • Existing model: Your drawing contains at least one rail and one column whose endpoints are coincident.

    Step-by-step guide

    Step 1: Opening the interface for connections

    1. Start your CAD program and load the corresponding drawing.
    2. In the menu bar, switch to the SuCri tab.
    3. Click the Connections command.

    Expected result: A dialog box for centrally controlling the connection types opens.

    Step 2: Selecting the connection type "Joint"

    1. In the list of connection types, look for the entry Joint.
    2. Click the Joint button.

    Expected result: The plugin prepares the analysis of the model and displays specific options for joint connections.

    Step 3: Identifying and selecting the connection points

    1. The plugin automatically starts the analysis of the components. A manual selection order (e.g. column first, then rail) is not required.
    2. Review the visual representation of the possible connections in the model.

    Expected result: Possible connection points are highlighted in the CAD window by markers or highlighting.

    Step 4: Placing the joint connection

    1. Click directly in the CAD window on the marked spot or select the connection from the list in the dialog box.

    Expected result: The connection is placed and aligned automatically. All necessary elements such as screws, nuts, washers as well as joint plates are modeled as 3D objects. The material takeoff is updated automatically.

    Step 5: Checking and adjusting (optional)

    1. Carry out a visual inspection of the placed connection.
    2. If needed, use the dialog box or the CAD properties palette to adjust details such as screw types or plate thicknesses.

    Important notes

    • Geometric definition: The automation only takes effect if the endpoints of rail and column fall precisely into each other.
    • Material takeoff: Thanks to the detailed modeling, all small parts are captured correctly for the bill of materials, which minimizes procurement errors.
    • Performance: For complex models, the analysis of the connection points can take a few seconds.

    Troubleshooting

    • No connections are found:
      • Check whether the endpoints of the components sit exactly on each other (use object snap).
      • Make sure that the components are correctly categorized as structural elements.
    • Connection elements are missing or incorrectly dimensioned:
      • Check the plugin libraries and default values.
      • Verify that the profile sizes of your components lie within the supported parameters of the connection.
